Mutual coherent structures for heat and angular momentum transport in turbulent Taylor-Couette flows

نویسندگان

چکیده

When subjected to a radial temperature gradient, Taylor-Couette flows undergo evolution of flow states with increasing rotations: first transition from asymmetric vertical convection spiral vortices, and second turbulence characterized by Taylor vortices. In the latter turbulent state, transport heat angular momentum exhibits similar power-law scaling. Our data analysis spatial distributions flux densities reveals mutual structures through which both are transported efficiently.

The angular momentum transport by the strato-rotational instability in simulated Taylor-Couette flows

Aims. To investigate the stability and angular momentum transport by the strato-rotational instability in the nonlinear regime. Methods. The hydrodynamic compressible equations are solved in a cartesian box in which the outer cylinder is embedded. Gravity along the rotation axis leads to density stratification. No-slip boundary conditions are used in the radial direction, while free-slip condit...

Scalings and structures in turbulent Couette-Taylor flow.

The scaling of velocity structure functions in Couette-Taylor flow [Lewis and Swinney, Phys. Rev. E 59, 5457 (1999)] is revisited to obtain more accurate values of the scaling exponents for the Reynolds number range investigated, 12,000 to 540,000 (Taylor Reynolds numbers, 34<R(lambda)<220). Systematic convergence of the statistics with increasing sample size is examined, and the uncertainty of...

Statistics of turbulent fluctuations in counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flows.

The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinders are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to 1.49×10(12) [O(Re)=10(6)]. The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry. For each experiment 5×10(6) data points are acquired and carefully analyzed. Using extende...

Identifying coherent structures and vortex clusters in Taylor-Couette turbulence

The nature of the underlying structures in Taylor-Couette (TC) flow, the flow between two co-axial and independently rotating cylinders is investigated by two methods. First, the quadrant analysis technique for identifying structures with intense radial-azimuthal stresses (also referred to as ‘Q’s) of Lozano-Durán et al., (J. Fluid Mech. 694, 100-130) is used to identify the main structures res...

Ultimate turbulent Taylor-Couette flow.

The flow structure of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with Reynolds numbers up to Re(i)=2×10(6) of the inner cylinder is experimentally examined with high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV). The wind Reynolds numbers Re(w) of the turbulent Taylor-vortex flow is found to scale as Re(w)∝Ta(1/2), exactly as predicted by Grossmann and Lohse [Phys. Fluids 23, 045108 (2011).] for the ultim...
